In 1981, film critic Vito Russo published his monumental work of cinematic queer theory, which examined the beginnings of cinema from the days of Edison and Lumiere to contemporary times and analysed the cinematic portrayal of homosexuality over time. What he saw was a depressing image of repression and cariacature throughout his survey. Sadly, Russo died in 1990 of AIDS, and while he did see the beginnings of independent film's embrace of homosexual subject matter, one is left to wonder how he would view contemporary films and their queer dimensions. Here Outside the Celluloid Closet, films from the last twenty years will be dissected for all its fabulousness to be seen!
